'64 Phightin's sweep '07 Brew Crew

The Phillies swept the Brewers in a three game series as the Philly bats came alive against a weak Milwaukee staff.

In game one the Phillies jumped out to a two run lead on a Johnny Callison single, but the Brewers came storming back with four runs in the bottom of the frame on Home Runs from Fielder and Jenkins.  A Wes Covington blast brought the Phillies back to within one, but a Geoff Jenkins double and a sacrifice fly put the Brewers up by three in the bottom of the inning.

Unfortunately for the Brewers Yovani Gallardo could not hold the lead and Dick (don’t call me Richie) Allen blasted a three run homer in the fourth to tie the score.  A sacrifice fly off the bat of Tony Taylor tallied the winning run in the fifth.  Dallas Green, W (1-0)  held the Brewers scoreless for 3.2 innings to pick up the win and Ed Roebuck pitched a perfect ninth to preserve the win.

Ryan Braun picked up a hit to extend his hitting streak to 16 games.

In game two the Phillies jumped out to a two run lead in the first and extended the lead to 6 – 0 before Jim Bunning, W (2-2) yielded solo homers to Richie Weeks and Prince Fielder in the ninth in a 6 – 2 Phillies win.  Cookie Rojas went 4 for 4 with a triple and his first home run of the season to lead the Philadelphia attack.  Ryan Braun was held hitless and his streak ended at 16 games.  Jeff Suppan, L (2-3) took the loss.

In game three both teams tallied once in the first, but Chris Short, W (2-1) did not allow another over 7.2 innings and Jack Baldschun held the Brewers scoreless for the final 1.1 innings. Dick Allen and Tony Gonzalez combined for 6 hits (3 doubles) and all three runs in the 3 – 1 Victory for the Phillies.

55 Pale Hose Dismantle 87 Bombers in 2 Games

Game #1 at Chicago
Walt Dropo banged out 3 hits and knocked 2 runs to lead Chicago to a 5-2 win. Connie Johnson (1-0) pitched 7 innings, yielding just 3 hits, for his first win of the season. Sandy Consuerga (1) got the save. Dave Winfield (6) saw one of his 3 hits leave the yard, as he lead the Bronx Bombers. Tommy John (1-3) was the starting and losing pitcher.

Game #2 at New York
The Pale Hose exploded for 7 runs in the 2nd and cruised to a 14-3 victory on the road. Jim Busby provided the biggest blow in the inning with a 2-run triple. He would finish with a game-high 3 hits and 4 RBI. Jack Harshman (2-0) benefited on the hill. Joe Niekro (1-1) took the brunt of the ChiSox 13-hit attack.

Game #3 at New York
Bombers revenge! The Yanks explode for 5 in the 1st and 4 in the 8th in a 10-1 laugher. Mike Pagliarulo (2) led the way with 2 doubles, a HR and 3 RBI. Don Mattingly (1) and Gary Ward (3) also went yard. Ron Guidry (2-2) tossed 6 innings for the win. Charles Hudson (1) hurled the final 3, surrendering just 1 hit. M's and Royals split a pair

SAFECO Field
GAME 1
Gura vs Moyer
Royals 3, Mariners 0

Solid pitching from two crafty lefties, who went 8+ innings each.  All of the scoring was done by the 3rd inning.  KC scored 3 that inning with Frank White's solo shot being the ultimate game winner.  After finishing 8 strong Gura was replaced by "The Quiz", who made it look easy by fanning the final two batters (Edgar and Booney).

GAME 2
Blue vs F.Garcia
Mariners 4, Royals 3

The M's stretched Freddy Garcia to the limit (124 pitches in 6.1 IP), then had to rely on a late comeback to win.  With the score tied 3-3 Bret Boone scored the go ahead run on a Guillen grounder to short.  Arthur Rhodes, who threw a scoreless 8th got the win and Hasegawa pitched a perfect 9th to get the save.  Rhodes came into the game with runners on 1st and 2nd and nobody out in the 8th and worked his way out of the jam by fanning Jerry Martin and Amos Otis before getting John Wathan to lift a lazy fly to center.

Royals Stadium
GAME 3
Pineiro vs Splittorff
Royals 4, Mariners 3

Same score...different day.  Once again the M's scored late to break a tie.  Pineiro was solid (7IP / 3ER) and Hasegawa notched his 3rd save.  Ichiro (4-5) scored 2 runs and had 40% of Seattle's hits.  He was the catalyst that scored the go ahead run in the 7th when he singled with 2 outs, stole second and scored on Randy Winn's single.

GAME 4
Meche vs Black
Royals 5, Mariners 1

Bud Black was in complete control for 7.2 innings before handing the ball off to the Quiz, who shut the door and locked up the series split.  Every Royal batter, except for Hal McRae, had a knock.  The bottom 5 batters in Seattle's lineup couldn't buy a hit.  Weather was hot (88 degrees) and rainy.  If Seattle was home the dome would close, but in KC you have to deal with the elements like real men.

George Kell had 3 hits to lead both clubs. Billy Pierce (2-0) hurled 8 IP for W. Eduardo Perez (1) and Chili Davis (2) hit PH homers for the Angels in 7th and 9th, respectively. Game #4 - Minnie Minoso went 4-for-5 to power Chicago to a 6-4 victory in the series finale. His only out, a ground out in the 9th plated Chico Carrasquel with GWRBI. Minoso later scored on a Walt Dropo single making up the final margin. Dropo (4) hit a 2-run bomb in the 6th and finished with 3 RBI. Sandy Cansuegra (1-0) earned the win in relief with Harry Dorish (2) nabbing the save. Smith (0-2) took the loss.

Dodger Stadium

GAME 4
Gallardo vs Osteen
Brewers 9, Dodgers 5

Hardy had a 3 hit game.

Bitter Rivals (Sahx/Bombers) split series

Crazy series that saw lots of hitting (Rickey .600 and Ted .500 went nuts), some weird plays (Henry Cotto put in as a PR and then showing up in lineup while he was still on second as runner), some bad pitching (especially BOS bullpen).

Bucs/Cards split series as Stargell dominates

An evenly matched series as each team won a close game, and each team won in a blowout. In the end, the Cardinals scored 21 runs and the Pirates 20.

Willie Stargell had a big series for Pittsburgh, going 7 for 12, driving in 7 runs. Enos Slaughter, after getting only one hit in the first two games, went 3 for 4 in the final two including hitting his first home run of the year.

The losses were the first two suffered by the Bucs, who have won six while St. Louis maintains it’s .500 record at 4-4.
