M's and Royals split a pair

SAFECO Field
GAME 1
Gura vs Moyer
Royals 3, Mariners 0

Solid pitching from two crafty lefties, who went 8+ innings each.  All of the scoring was done by the 3rd inning.  KC scored 3 that inning with Frank White's solo shot being the ultimate game winner.  After finishing 8 strong Gura was replaced by "The Quiz", who made it look easy by fanning the final two batters (Edgar and Booney).

GAME 2
Blue vs F.Garcia
Mariners 4, Royals 3

The M's stretched Freddy Garcia to the limit (124 pitches in 6.1 IP), then had to rely on a late comeback to win.  With the score tied 3-3 Bret Boone scored the go ahead run on a Guillen grounder to short.  Arthur Rhodes, who threw a scoreless 8th got the win and Hasegawa pitched a perfect 9th to get the save.  Rhodes came into the game with runners on 1st and 2nd and nobody out in the 8th and worked his way out of the jam by fanning Jerry Martin and Amos Otis before getting John Wathan to lift a lazy fly to center.

Royals Stadium
GAME 3
Pineiro vs Splittorff
Royals 4, Mariners 3

Same score...different day.  Once again the M's scored late to break a tie.  Pineiro was solid (7IP / 3ER) and Hasegawa notched his 3rd save.  Ichiro (4-5) scored 2 runs and had 40% of Seattle's hits.  He was the catalyst that scored the go ahead run in the 7th when he singled with 2 outs, stole second and scored on Randy Winn's single.

GAME 4
Meche vs Black
Royals 5, Mariners 1

Bud Black was in complete control for 7.2 innings before handing the ball off to the Quiz, who shut the door and locked up the series split.  Every Royal batter, except for Hal McRae, had a knock.  The bottom 5 batters in Seattle's lineup couldn't buy a hit.  Weather was hot (88 degrees) and rainy.  If Seattle was home the dome would close, but in KC you have to deal with the elements like real men.

Sandy Cansuegra (1-0) earned the win in relief with Harry Dorish (2) nabbing the save. Smith (0-2) took the loss.

Bitter Rivals (Sahx/Bombers) split series

Crazy series that saw lots of hitting (Rickey .600 and Ted .500 went nuts), some weird plays (Henry Cotto put in as a PR and then showing up in lineup while he was still on second as runner), some bad pitching (especially BOS bullpen).

Bucs/Cards split series as Stargell dominates

An evenly matched series as each team won a close game, and each team won in a blowout. In the end, the Cardinals scored 21 runs and the Pirates 20.

Willie Stargell had a big series for Pittsburgh, going 7 for 12, driving in 7 runs. Enos Slaughter, after getting only one hit in the first two games, went 3 for 4 in the final two including hitting his first home run of the year.

The losses were the first two suffered by the Bucs, who have won six while St. Louis maintains it’s .500 record at 4-4.
